Course Leader: Dr. Kevin J. Lewis, Dental Director, Dental Protection Ltd

Course Leader Credentials: During 20 years in full time general practice and 10 further years practising part-time, Kevin developed special interests in preventive dentistry and practice management. A keen writer, Kevin has written two textbooks on dental practice management and has a regular column in Dental Practice, a journal he has been the Associate Editor of since 1981.

From a decontamination and cross infection control perspective, he has in recent years contributed to two CD training programmes on infection control, and a BDA A12 Advice Sheet.

He has been involved with Dental Protection since 1989, initially on the Board of Directors, then as a dento-legal adviser, before being appointed Dental Director in 1998. In 2003 he became a member of the Council of the Medical Protection Society.

Course overview:

The effective implementation of a cross infection control policy, supported by the whole dental team is essential to ensuring a duty of care to ALL involved with the dental practice.

This 1 day course is designed to offer senior members of the dental team a guide to the laws, directives, statutory instruments, ethical frameworks and guidelines relating to infection control in the dental environment.

The programme has been arranged into four sections with emphasis on developing practical tips for successful compliance with all these requirements in a busy working environment:

  1. The legal and ethical framework.
  2. Understanding the essential aspects of the law and how it affects you.
  3. Practical implications. (including real life case studies)
  4. Dealing with underperformance & making cross infection control a high priority in your practice.

Aims & Objectives for the day:

  • Understand the various laws, regulations and guidelines that relate to the field of infection control
  • Appreciate the ethical issues involved, and how these relate to the statutory obligations
  • Understand the expected standards of infection control and how to keep up to date in this fast-changing field

  • Understand the powers and processes in the monitoring and maintenance of infection control standards
