Course title:
Level 2 training - Infection Control in the Dental Environment

Lecturer: Dr. Martin Fulford

The Advanced level training session will be presented by Dr Martin Fulford, who after 13 years working in Medical Microbiology graduated as a dentist in 1986.

Dr Fulford has been active in research from a GDP base and has a particular interest in infection control. He is a member of the BDA Health and Science Committee and has contributed to the BDA advice sheet A12 'Infection Control in Dentistry'. He has recently completed an MPhil at Liverpool University, School of Clinical dental Sciences and is currently working on a number of dental specific infection control projects at Porton Down.

Educational aims and Objectives:

1. To provide an in depth knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding emerging pathogenic infectious agents which may potentially be transferred through dental procedures.

2. To provide a detailed explanation of the practices and procedures for implementing effective Cross Infection Control as recommended in the British Dental Associations Advice Sheet - "Infection Control in Dentistry".

3. To examine the latest thinking behind new recommendations for decontamination of dental instruments and to provide practical guidance on how effective decontamination should be undertaken.

Anticipated Outcomes

It is anticipated that participants of this training resource will on completion have an in depth understanding of the emerging infection control issues facing dentistry.

The programme is designed to provide a detailed analysis of the recommended procedures necessary for the implementation of effective Infection Control in a dental context.
